Privacy Policy

Last updated: July 2026. The short version: the instant tools run in your browser, accounts are optional, and the only text that reaches our servers is what you explicitly send for AI analysis or save to history.

The short version

WordCount (wordcountonline.app) is a free suite of writing tools. Every tool works without an account. Creating a free account is optional and only needed for two features: AI Deep Analysis and saved analysis history.

The instant checkers, word counting, keyword matching, readability, and every score you see the moment you click a button, run entirely inside your own browser. That text is not uploaded or stored. Two optional features are different, and we say so wherever they appear: if you run an AI Deep Analysis, the text you submitted is sent securely to our server and passed to Google's Gemini API to generate the report; if you save an analysis to history, that analysis is stored in our database with your account. Neither happens automatically.

The site is supported by display advertising and an optional one-time Pro purchase. Like most ad-supported websites, our advertising and analytics partners use cookies. The sections below explain exactly what that means and how you can control it.

What we collect

Information you give us

None is required to use the tools. If you choose to create a free account (needed only for AI Deep Analysis and saved history), we store your name, email address, and a securely hashed password. If you email us directly, we will of course see your email address and whatever you write, but only because you sent it to us.

The text you enter into the tools

By default, nothing reaches us. All instant counting and analysis runs locally in your browser using JavaScript, and closing the tab discards it. There are two explicit exceptions:

  • AI Deep Analysis, when you click the AI analysis button (available to signed-in users), the text you submitted is sent over HTTPS to our server, which forwards it to Google's Gemini API to generate the report. We do not use it for anything else, and it is not used to train models.
  • Saved history, if you are signed in, analysis results (and, where applicable, the analyzed text) can be saved to your account so you can revisit them. This lives in our database until you delete it or your account.

Data stored on your own device

To make the tools more convenient, some data is kept in your browser's local storage:

  • Theme preference (wc-theme), remembers whether you chose light or dark mode.
  • Auto-saved text (wc_text), the word counter can restore your last session so you do not lose your work if you accidentally close the tab.
  • Local writing history (wc-history), the word counter's recent-sessions feature for Pro users; stays on your device.
  • Pro license state (wc_pro, wc_license), remembers that Pro is activated on this device. The key is sent to Gumroad only when you activate it, for verification.
  • Sign-in token (wc_token, wc_user), if you have an account, this keeps you signed in. It is sent to our server with account-related requests to authenticate you.

You can clear all of this at any time by clearing your browser's site data for wordcountonline.app. The tools keep working; you would just need to sign in or re-enter your license key again.

Accounts, AI analysis & history

Accounts are optional. A free account exists so that the AI Deep Analysis and history features can work. We store your name, email, and a hashed password (we never see or store your password in plain text). We do not send newsletters or marketing email; account email is used only for things you request, such as password resets.

AI Deep Analysis is processed by Google's Gemini API acting as our service provider. Your submitted text is transmitted to Google to generate the report and is subject to Google's API terms. We send only the text you submit, no name, email, or identifier goes with it.

Saved history is stored in our database (hosted on Cloudflare) and is visible only to your account. You can delete individual entries at any time, and deleting your account removes your history with it. To delete your account, email us; we process deletion requests within 30 days.

Analytics

We use Google Analytics to understand, in aggregate, how the site is used, which pages are popular, roughly what part of the world visitors come from, and what kind of device they are on. This helps us decide what to improve.

Google Analytics sets cookies and may collect data such as your IP address (which Google anonymizes), browser type, and the pages you view on this site. It does not receive the text you enter into any tool. You can opt out of Google Analytics across all websites by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.

Advertising

This site displays ads served by Google AdSense (publisher ID ca-pub-1719218905350079). Advertising is what keeps the tools free.

  • Google, as a third-party vendor, uses cookies to serve ads on this site.
  • Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visits to this site and other sites on the internet.
  • Third-party vendors and ad networks may also use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits.

You can opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings. You can also opt out of a third party's use of cookies for personalized advertising at aboutads.info/choices or youronlinechoices.eu (for EU visitors). If you use an ad blocker, every tool on the site works exactly the same.

California privacy rights

If you are a California resident, the CCPA/CPRA gives you the right to know what personal information we hold, request its deletion, and opt out of its "sale" or "sharing." AdSense's use of cookies for personalized ads counts as "sharing" under this law. To opt out, use the Google Ads Settings link above, or email us and we'll handle it directly. We do not sell personal information for money.

Cookies

Cookies are small text files stored by your browser. On this site they are used only for the analytics and advertising purposes described above; we do not use them ourselves to build a personal profile of you. You can block or delete cookies through your browser settings at any time. Doing so will not prevent the writing tools from working; it may only affect how relevant the ads you see are.

Third-party services

WordCount relies on a small number of reputable third parties to operate. Each has its own privacy policy governing how it handles data:

  • Google AdSense & Google Analytics, advertising and usage measurement, covered by the Google Privacy Policy.
  • Google Fonts, the site's typefaces load from Google's servers, so your browser's request exposes your IP address to Google as part of delivering the fonts.
  • Cloudflare, hosting, content delivery, and the database that stores accounts and saved history. Cloudflare may process request metadata (such as your IP address) to deliver pages securely and protect against abuse.
  • Google Gemini API, generates the optional AI Deep Analysis reports from text you explicitly submit, covered by Google's API terms.
  • Gumroad, processes Pro purchases and license key verification. We never see your payment details; Gumroad handles the transaction under its own privacy policy.

Data security and retention

Text you enter into the instant tools is never sent to us, so there is no copy of it on a server to lose or breach. What we do hold: account records (name, email, hashed password) and any analyses you chose to save, stored in Cloudflare's database and transmitted only over HTTPS. AI analysis text is processed to generate your report and is not kept as a stored document by us. Saved history persists until you delete it or your account; aggregate analytics data is retained by Google according to the retention settings on our account and Google's own policies.

Children's privacy

WordCount is a general-audience writing utility and is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information through direct contact, please email us and we will delete it.

Your choices

  • Use the tools without providing any personal information, this is the default. Accounts and AI analysis are opt-in.
  • Clear your browser's stored data for this site to remove the saved theme, text, license state, and sign-in token at any time.
  • Delete saved history entries from your account, or email us to delete your account and everything tied to it.
  • Opt out of personalized ads and analytics using the links provided in the sections above.
  • Use an ad blocker or privacy browser, the tools are designed to work fully either way.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the site or legal requirements change; the "Last updated" date above will reflect it. Continued use of the site after an update means you accept the revised policy.
