How reading time is calculated
Reading time estimates come from dividing your word count by an assumed reading speed, measured in words per minute (wpm). This tool defaults to 238 wpm, a figure drawn from reading-speed research on adult silent reading of general-audience text, then lets you drag the speed slider to match your own pace or your audience's.
The math is simple, but the assumption behind it isn't universal. A technical paper full of unfamiliar terms and data tables reads much slower than a casual blog post, even at the same word count. Fiction tends to read faster than non-fiction because narrative prose flows more predictably than dense argument or instructions. Font size, line length, and whether someone is reading on a phone, a printed page, or a large monitor all nudge real-world reading speed up or down by 10–20%.
Reading vs. speaking time
Reading time and speaking time are different calculations, which is why this tool reports both. Silent reading averages 200–300 wpm, while comfortable spoken delivery runs much slower, typically 120–150 wpm for a presentation and up to 160 wpm for energetic delivery. That's roughly half the pace of reading, which is why a script that reads quickly on the page can run long once you're actually speaking it aloud — always time a speech by its speaking-pace estimate, not its reading-time estimate.
Reading time for common content lengths
Using the 238 wpm default, here's roughly how long common content lengths take to read:
| Word count | Reading time | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 100 words | <1 minute | A short social caption or email |
| 500 words | ~2 minutes | A news brief |
| 1,000 words | ~4 minutes | A blog post or opinion column |
| 1,500 words | ~6 minutes | A detailed how-to article |
| 2,500 words | ~10.5 minutes | A long-form feature |
| 5,000 words | ~21 minutes | A short story or report chapter |
